Gill is not an original member. The boys who would become known as New Edition grew up in Boston. They met local manager and choreographer Brooke Payne while performing at a talent show in Roxbury, Mass. New Edition caught their break in when they were discovered at a talent show at Boston's Strand Theatre by music producer and songwriter Maurice Starr. The next day they started working on what would become their debut album, Candy Girl. Their debut was both a critical and commercial success. They subsequently embarked on a major tour to promote the album. Starr explained that tour expenses prevented them from being paid more. In they split with Starr and sued his label.
