A lot of that is thanks to Hugh Hefner. For the teenage boys of my generation, it was the magazine being offered up by a generous school-route bush, if they were lucky. Through the ages of Playboy meant nothing more to me than a symbol of the objectification of women. It was when I browsed through my Studio catalogue magazine in the early s that the Playboy transformation really struck me. Everything from fluffy slippers, dressing gowns and PJs, to bed sets, stationery, bedside lamps… Playboy was now an established brand. Hugh Hefner had used his business acumen — and no doubt that of the large team surrounding him — to steer the corporation towards a universal acceptance. What I can say, from my limited knowledge of the man, is that he always seemed to be the perfect blend of intelligent and sophisticated. There was an underlying kindness, and a respect for women which has been sadly lacking in some other men in the porn industry this from personal experience as well as media coverage. To be perfectly honest with you, I was neither.

My roommate always gets Playboy. He puts the new mag right by the silverware drawer in the kitchen, and it usually sits there wide open. I see the darn thing every day when I walk in the front door. Yesterday, I decided to open it up. Slightly enticing. What I saw as I flipped through back to front bad habit was not what I had expected. The mag was filled with a series of articles that basically sold the lifestyle of an ambitious, successful man. A man who had wealth, style, worldly tastes, and yes, women on his arms. Guys I envy. Marketing: basic stuff I had messed up in my first two years of blogging.
Published: June 21, True, if you can imagine Hugh Hefner without the satin pajamas and harem of spray-tanned blondes. The comparison is inescapable because Cooper, 26, is the only Hef left in the family business.
